Air fryer Buffalo Tofu

This spicy air fried buffalo tofu is a crispy and tasty vegan main. Serve it as an appetizer or snack, you will love it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • ¼ cup flour
  • ½ cup soy milk
  • ¾ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ tsp. cayenne
  • ½ tsp. italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • olive oil for brushing/spraying
  • ½ cup hot sauce
  • 1 tbsp. vegan butter

Directions:

  • Press tofu block well to remove moisture. I normally press for 10 minutes using a heavy pan.
  • Then dry tofu using kitchen towels.
  • Cut tofu into ½” cubes. Don’t keep the cubes large or the tofu will taste bland inside and may not crisp up easily.
  • Arrange the breading station: Take 3 shallow dishes of wholewheat flour, plant-based milk and breadcrumbs.
  • Season breadcrumbs with salt, cayenne, garlic powder and Italian seasoning.
  • Preheat air fryer at 180C or 360F for 5 minutes.
  • First dip tofu cubes in flour to coat well. Shake off any excess flour.
  • While we use ¼ cup flour in the recipe, the actual flour getting utilised is lesser.
  • Then dip these tofu cubes in soy milk so that they are well coated with milk.
  • This helps to adhere breadcrumbs to the surface.
  • Now press the cubes in seasoned breadcrumbs to coat well.
  • Repeat this for all tofu cubes that you are air frying in one batch.
  • You may need to do two batches for a larger quantity.
  • Place tofu cubes in preheated air fryer basket in one layer.
  • Air fry at 360F or 180C for 8-10 minutes till the tofu cubes are crispy.
  • This time may vary depending upon how big your tofu cubes are.
  • You can flip them midway during air frying.
  • In a bowl, mix together melted vegan butter/butter and hot sauce.
  • Take out air fried tofu cubes. Toss them in hot sauce and serve hot with your favourite dip.
